Meeting on Sept. 17

The Thaddeus Stevens Society will meet on
Saturday, September 17, at 4 p.m. at the house of
Maryann Craver at 138 W. Middle Street in
Gettysburg.
Maryann lives in a house once owned by Thaddeus
Stevens that has been restored to its appearance in
the nineteenth century. Stevens was one of the largest
property owners in Gettysburg in the 1830s.
Besides a tour of the house, there will be a
business session at the meeting. For more information,
call Ross Hetrick at 717-334-5227 or email

Stevens News

New Website
A new Thaddeus Stevens Society website has
been set up recently at
thaddeusstevenssociety.com.
The site has a a variety of links at the bottom, which
include information about biographies, the Lancaster
house project, his iron mill at Caledonia and links to
other Stevens sites. There is even a link to the
Stevens joke book. The website will be constantly
updated with the goal of becoming the the
clearinghouse for all things concerning Thaddeus
Stevens.

Generous Donation
The Society received a very generous donation of
$1,000 from Kingsley and Mary Evans Smith in
April. Mary is a descendant of Stevens's brother,
Joshua Stevens. She and her husband, Kingsley,
came up from Maryland to attend the events
surrounding Stevens's birthday on April 4. This is
the largest donation ever made to the Society and
we greatly appreciate it.

Heritage Festival
The Society will be participating in the Adams
County Heritage Festival on Sunday, September
18, from noon to 5 p.m. The fesitval, which
celebrates the history and diversity of Adams
County will be held at the recreation park in
Gettysburg. We will have a booth at the event
where we will distribute information about
Thaddeus Stevens and sign up new members. If

Caledonia Blacksmith Shop
The blacksmith shop at Caledonia State Park has
been open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during
the summer and will continue this schedule until
Labor Day. The shop, which is the last remaining
building of Steven's iron mill operation, is open
from noon to 2 p.m. on Fridays and from 1 p.m. to
4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday
and Sunday the shop is staffed by Pam Sheirer,
who is an actual blacksmith and entertains vistors
with pounding hot metal into intricate forms. It is
definitely worth the time to visit the shop near
Chambersburg.
